Zebra 2 After Skool Soundset

Here is a little update on the next soundset for Zebra 2 VST from me. First of all i changed the working title to "Zebra After Skool Soundset", this makes more sense to me since "Zebra Oldskool Soundset" was the name of the previous soundset.

Zebra 2 After Skool Soundset will be a mixed bag of 128 presets.

Here are some demos of the work so far:

These are interesting, but I'm wondering if Zebra2 is capable of something more warm and/or screaming (02 does touch on the latter). The textures that Zebra's capable of are outstanding, but something is missing to my ears.

Of course, I realize that the operative phrase is my ears, and I'm comparing Zebra to a synth I absolutely love, Imposcar. Maybe it's that a lot of Zebra demos are jazzy, which may not resonate with me. How possible would it be to replicate an Imposcar-ish sound with Zebra? Or would it really be dependent on the filter?

btw - the slow emo pads are outstanding. Kinda CS80-ish. (Another synth I really dig ;-)) Not to mention the atmospheric stuff in the 'various presets' mp3. (and a nice keys patch around 2:30)

Hi arp :)

Zebra in its present state is a clean synth in all regards and the type of grittyness/screaming attitude are somewhat difficult to come up with. The main reason is the filter structure which is build around another concept than ImpOSCar but Zebra is very capeable of doing bassline things, still they come out a tad too clean but in most cases you get something usefull.

The FILTER DRIVE and the SEPERATION thing in ImpOSCar is the key to its scream and that cant be copied in current version of Zebra. These two functions works more like a semi destruction/degrading on clean signals. I wont call ImpOSCar warm thou, CS 80 i would call warm. But if we speak in terms of TUBES effects i can see what you mean by warm.

So yes, in the end its all about filter setup and response.

My soundwise reference lies within the Jazzy and Ambient genres and that affects all my demos. My ears are somewhat allergic to "Modern" music for longer periods. ;o)

Anyways, you could mail me a ImpOSCar preset and i will have Zebra take a go at it.

Ohh one more thing, all my Zebra demos are unproccesed and this make things stand out a good deal weaker compared to the treated mix you would be able to produce.

Nothing is more disapointing than picking up a what you think is a nice soundset only to discover that the demos provided was proccesed and you have no clue how the provider came up which such a convincing mix.

You sometimes see it written with small text like, "we used a tad EQ and slight limiter and a tiny reverb tail on the mix." ;o)

I admit its VERY tempting to add some process here and there but i would be fooling the users in the other end, so i to keep everything handled by Zebra only.

Excellent point about the processing.

Perhaps what I should really focus on is getting a good filter (maybe the Korg MS20 vst?). I suppose the fun will be trying things out - previously I used cracks and I've decided to end my careless ways. So now that I actually have to spend money I'm giving it a lot of thought.

Hmmm MS20 might be cool. Here are a few synths you might also want to give a try:

Synth1 (its Free so get it anyway)
Pro-53 (Native Instruments)
ABL Pro (Audiorealism)
Phoscyon (D16 Group)
PPG Wave 2.0 (Steinberg or Waldorf)
Exciton (Groovecube)

These synths all have something which i regard as authentic BITE in the filters.

Ah - I remember the PPG Wave 2. I could never really figure out how to program it, but it was one of the first VSTi I ever used. I've used Exciton as well, that was a favorite for a while. Really splendid sounds.

The MS20 has been in my head as I read somewhere that it was a big part of Aphex Twin's early arsenal (SAW I/II-ish). The bonus would be having the filter to use with other VSTi.

Phoscyon I'll have to check out. I think D16 also makes some good drum machines too. It'll be interesting to see what I do with a budget. Thanks for your suggestions :-)

OOh - ABL Pro looks cool! I'm a sucker for anything with virtual cables!
